REVIEWS FOR THE VAPORS

“A juicy tale . . . [David Hill] offers up a huge cast of colorful, mostly sleazy characters, but he focuses on three key players . . . Weaving their stories in and out . . . Hill unfolds an engrossing history of corruption at the highest levels . . . Captivating.”
Kirkus Reviews

“[David Hill’s] fantastic debut blends true crime and Southern history to chronicle the transformation of Hot Springs, Arkansas, from a spa town into a hotbed of horse racing, prostitution, and illegal gambling . . . Hill tracks this history through the lives of three central figures: Owney Madden, Dane Harris, and Hazel Hill (the author’s grandmother) . . . Expertly interweaving family memoir, Arkansas politics, and Mafia lore, Hill packs the story full of colorful characters and hair-raising events. This novelistic history hits the jackpot.”

PODCASTS & RADIO

  • Alex and Andrew Ford had me as a guest on their hilarious travel podcast Take Me There to discuss traveling to Las Vegas.

  • I appeared on House of Cards Radio to chat with writer/gambler/organizer Ashley Adams about the Stones Poker cheating scandal.

  • Chad Millman invited me to appear on The Favorites podcast on The Action Network to discuss my piece Requiem for a Sports Bettor.

  • I went on The Carter Bryant Show on 107.1FM in South Arkansas to discuss my cockfighting story. I particularly enjoyed getting to talk about immigration, ICE, and sanctuary cities on a morning sports talk radio program. I don't think there's a lot of that happening. Listen to the conversation here.

  • I was a guest on SiriusXM At the Races with Steve Byk to discuss The Vapors, my newsletter, and Oaklawn Park. I did a whole hour. A really fun interview with someone I really admire. Archive is here.

  • I went on Eye on Gaming's Sports Hour in Las Vegas with John Kelly to talk about my new book and some of my other previous work. I was the guest for almost the entire hour. Listen here.

  • I was a guest on Andy Beckerman's Beginnings Podcast where we talked about the differences between collaboration and independent creative work. Listen here.
